What is Passivation and Why Do It? Passivation is a post fabrication (grinding, welding, cutting) metal fi nishing process used to remove any free iron which has deposited on the surface of the stainless steel. The free iron interfers with the chromium oxide layer that covers the stainless surface and protects the underlying alloy from corrosion. Removing the manufacturing free iron debris in the “passivation” process allows the passive layer to reform and returns the stainless steel to its original corrosion resistant state. JCM employs an environmentally safe 2 step process of both a manual removal and a citric acid bath method.
